[ATrpms-users] cinelerra problems

Hi,

I've been struggling trying to get a working version of
cinelerra. I'm running Scientific Linux 6.0 with an fvwm
window manager. uname -a shows:

Linux misty.localdomain 2.6.32-131.12.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue
Aug 23 11:13:45 CDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I've tried four approaches, none of which is satisfactory:

1. updating to the latest ATrpms package:
cinelerra-2.1-24.2_git20110613.el6.x86_64 available via yum,
along with an updated mjpegtools:
mjpegtools.x86_64 1:2.0.0-21.el6
Although this installs, the resulting display does not work,
in that none of the buttons (menus) are responsive to mouse
actions, nor do key-strokes work (e.g. "o" for loading a
file), and the only way to get out is to kill the process.

(I see an email exchange from last September where Chris
Schanzle wrote describing this problem.)

2. reverting to the earlier ATrpms package:
cinelerra-2.1-21_git20101021.el6.x86_64, which used to work
well for me, but now does not. Although its buttons (menus)
do respond to mouse actions in that I can (for example) load
an mp4 file, whenever I hit the "play" button it immediately
(and always) crashes. (Since this used to work for me and now
does not, I'm wondering if this has something to do with my
updating ffmpeg packages, which have changed quite a bit.) (I
did do the

echo "0x7fffffff" > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax

as advised, but that did not help.)

3. trying building cinelerra from a source, using the
"crazedmuleproductions" guide: git clone
git://git.cinelerra.org/j6t/cinelerra.git my_cinelerra then
autoreconf -i --force (--force is needed), which creates a
configure script that executes, but reports many missing
libraries such as libogg, libvorbis, etc., all of which seem
to be older than those I have installed. To replace my
installed libraries with these older ones would seem to break
tons of stuff, which I am loathe to do.

4. trying building cinelerra from the tarball
(cinelerra-4.3-src.tar.bz2) available from sourceforge. While
it configured nicely and compiled without apparent errors, it
oddly did not produce a cinelerra binary---only lots of
plugins. Quite mysterious.

So, what to try next? I like the program and would prefer it
to other options, but I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

I see that Scientific Linux has just released a stable 6.2
version. If I upgraded to 6.2 from my current 6.0 would that
make any difference?

Thanks,
