   Heh, ironically, just as I finished the script, I remembered your earlier 
post and downgraded my mplayer, so I'm using that at the moment instead :)


   My suspicion is that the mplayer guys have optimised out some part of the 
video processing code when 'vo null', but that the bit that's gone was 
responsible for the 'identify' option working.  But that's a sheer guess, 
I've not looked at the code.
