AFAICT the central repository at GitHub is still pretty linear although 
that is not expressed anymore in the revision numbers.
Because of the shared nature of the central repository the developers 
try to make sure not to rewrite history.

Perhaps the network graph might help some interpret the commits in the 
repository a little easier:
