The rule is: if your hardware works without video4linux, do not use it. It
is not clear for me
whether you need it or not.

Yes. There is also an alsa snapshot in the bleeding section. My hardware
requires it, for instance.
You can try it. I saw some people complaining in the alsa-devel list about
spdif.

It uses the version that was committed to the kernel. From time to time some
changes
considered stable enough are committed, and will be used in the next kernel
release.

video4linux list.
People there are not unfriendly. On the contrary, they have a real interest
on
fixing everything. They probably can give you some patches to try.
