If you haven't done so already I would recommend opening a bug report
at redhat.com. Maybe the kernel has already enough UDF support inside,
but is blocked by a bug, at the very least you will get some
information on what the issues may be and how to resolve them (with an
external kernel module build preferably).

Even though RHEL's kernel say 2.6.18 on the outside they do have a lot
of backports to qualify as younger kernels for some subsystems, so
maybe a later UDF sourceball will already work with it.
