You only need to uncomment/change the settings in
/etc/sysconfig/mythbackend if you want to override the defaults in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mythbackend.

At a guess, if the newer init scripts from MythTV SVN do not work
either there is a chance that your in-place Fedora upgrade has
affected the way in which a user's environment variables (such as
$HOME) are being set (meaning that neither MythTV nor atrpms are the
'real' culprit).
One approach would be to export the HOME variable from the init script
before the mythbackend service is started, and see whether this fixes
the problem. I could not tell from your initial post whether you had
explicitly exported HOME or just set it.
