Actually you do hit quite an important question here, as read-only
roots are a vital component for any GFS based multi-node setup or any
server farm with replacable nodes.

It once required quite a lot of consulting effort to get this going
but thanks to the stateless linux efforts (even though as a project
name it dies away) it has become easier. That is not to say that it
yet works out of the box, but perhaps it is close to it.

Have you tried with a pure RHEL5 kernel? Maybe the bug is in CentOS
rebuild (it happenes very rarely, but if you do check it you will be
able to properly file a bug at bugzilla.redhat.com and see what the
reaction is). If you don't have access to a RHEL5 kernel please
contact me in PM (and send me a public ssh key of yours).
