I don't think it is very likely that the kernel could be selectively
deciding whether the database speaks to mythfrontend, mythbackend or
mythtranscode.

Most probably what did make a difference was the reboot. I would
reboot into the working kernel and record every step I make t end up
with the successful transcoding. Then I would reboot into the other
kernel and repeat these steps. It shouldn't fail, but if it does add
some diagnostics to both setups like checking which services are up
and running, 'netstap -pan | grep mysql' and the like.
