No.

as root, typing /etc/init.d/mythbackend start
will show me an enormous amount of log and those logs aren't being
written to the normal log file.

I've never experienced that issue with the default init.d script. And
I've been running mythtv for over 2.5 years !

As for the fix, I know I posted them earlier !.

175 introduced an issue as the init.d script didn't get updated.
176 was a disaster and crashed all the time
177 introduced this new issue of the mythbackend not writing into the
default log file.
