Nope, turns out I need a different set of nvidia legacy drivers.  I have 
a Geforce2 MX which is at the very bottom of the cards supported with 
the 96XX legacy drivers.  Now I've installed the 9639 drivers and it got 
the i686 kmdl correctly.  I still had the same problem with X not 
finding the nvidia module but turns out I had the nvidia-graphics 
package installed that only works with the 100.X.X drivers.  Removed it 
and everything is working great.

Too bad I didn't figure this out earlier instead of wasting a whole day 
trying to get the 7185 drivers to work :(.  Nvidia is definitely getting 
confusing with all these different classes of drivers.  At least they 
continue to support all the older cards.
