I've been going through the wiki as well as the mailing list archives,
and it's starting to dawn on me that the problem here really is 'caused
by a relic concept called "filenames".
It's my contention that files shouldn't even be referenced by filenames.
Personally, I would rather have filenames be referenced by metainfo (and
this isn't just for packaging purposes). I've always thought that
subdirectory structures and filenames are too limiting.
Getting back to the kmod vs. kmdl issue, I think the problem is because
people are trying to stick and glean all the metainfo they want into and
from filenames. If these files didn't have filenames but were instead
referenced by Name, Requires, Version, BuiltFor, etc., I doubt there
would even have been a debate.
