Just thought I'd mention that I experienced a similar problem on one of
my machined. I compiled the latest yum from
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/development/source/SRPMS/ (yum-3.2.4-3.fc8.src.rpm) and that fixed the problem for me.
