Well, I tried vob->avi using ffmpeg and got the same error.

I have done this many times before, but I use a graphic tool
called dvdrip, which uses transcode. Very, very easy to learn and
the result is pretty good.

There is also acidrip in ATrpms, which uses mencoder.

You can try changing the spec file of ffmpeg (using the options you
mentioned before)
and recompiling it to see if it works.
