Well, yum and anaconda since the time it was being base don yum had
this glitches every now and then. I think both FC6 and F7 install
discs could be making your i686 to i586, there is some procedure
posted on the Fedora wiki on how to fix this if it happens.

It doesn't have to do anything with wireless & alsa etc., as the
decision to upgrade the kernel is purely triggered by the kernel and
yum. The kmdls are upgraded after the fact and obvioulsy manage to do
the proper thing. They even saved you from trouble: Had they had the
same bug as yum, you would be not noticing that your system was
transformed to i586. :)

I'd file that as a bug against yum and in case someone googles to this
post, please do mention the bugzilla URL. Thanks!
