I found what the issue is: portmapper picked that port for rpc.statd:

# rpcinfo -p | grep 873
    100024    1   tcp    873  status

Restarting xinetd w/o rpc.statd running fixes this. I hope the next
reboot doesn't mess up with the ports again. :/
