Please

o go init 3
o use nvidia-graphics-switch
o check that lsmod | grep nvidia returns something
o if not check the last lines of /etc/modprobe.conf,
  - does manually invocing modprobe nvidia help?
o If the module is loaded check /var/log/messages for the version it
  reports itself with
o If all looks fine try going into X again

=> If this still fails, one needs to check the X part of the ocnfig as
above for the kernel module part.
