I posted this yesterday, but it hasn't yet come back to me in the 
batched Digest form.  I thought I was running myth v0.21, but the 
frontend and backend identify themselves as

mythbackend version: 0.20.20061228-1 www.mythtv.org
mythfrontend version: 0.20.20061228-1 www.mythtv.org

This adds to my confusion, but it works better than before!
