 From this page looks as if this problem won't be solved upstream (lirc 
only supporting official kernel releases), and will need to be solved 
via patch in rpm build process.

Given above link, I assume it's simply a case of editing the spec & 
combining the "lirc-0.8.1-rhel4hack.patch" with something akin to 
attached patch file?
