No, you don't want to use xen, just because the non-xen kernel seems
to have disappeared. xen is for allowing other (xen guest) kernels to
boot on top of your kernel, e.g. virtualizing your system.

Perhaps you are doing something in yum.conf like exclude=kernel or
similar. For some reason yum has blacklisted the package named
"kernel" for you.

If you don't find the reason, install smart and atrpms-package-config
and use smart to get the latest kernel in. But you should better find
the reason for yum breaking on the kernel package.
