It wasn't a race condition, it's was an mmap bug that chew on your
memory (making rpm and firends hang, so you may be experiencing it as
a race). It is supposed to be removed from the latest FC5 kernel
update (it affected yum, apt and smart and possibly non-rpm related
apps, too).

But there may be traces of it left even after upgrading to
2.6.19. Better rebuild your rpmdb and also nuke smart's
/var/lib/smart/config once you boot into 2.6.19. I don't think that
you need to do anything with channels.
