A backup before upgrade is always a good idea. CentOS may well be the
ticket for you, as Axel suggested. RHEL5/CentOS-5 is closest to FC6 and
should be less of a leap than FC5->F8. Check out

IF you "must" upgrade rather than do a fresh install, my $0.02 worth
would be to do an anaconda upgrade rather than a "live" upgrade with yum
or apt. Less likely to be problematic. You will need to use the
"upgradeany" switch when booting the installer media to convince
anaconda to do an upgrade rather than a fresh install.

If you do switch to CentOS, you will find a lot of help on the mailing
list ( http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos ) or fora.
Feedback on your migration experiences would be appreciated, and could
make for some good additions to the Wiki.

Phil

P.S. Apologies to the OP for thread-hijacking, but perhaps CentOS might
be an option for you as well - although a CentOS upgrade would NOT work
well on your FC5/F8 chimera.
