If yum/rpm hang in the transaction test, then there is nothing that
modprobe etc can do, it is a pure rpm thing, and it is independent of
what packages yum wanted to install (well, not quite, as if the rpmdb
is broken and the package happen to live in the vicinity of the broken
db part, then it look like being package specific).
It looks like the rpmdb is locked by another process, or has been
damaged. If you still have these issues, then you need to rebuild the
rpmdb and hope for the best.
Also make sure you run the latest yum, as there were some reports
similar to yours on bugzilla.redhat.com that are supposed to be fixed
by the yum update.
