Hahaha.  Indeed, I saw mention of OpenGL on here a few days ago and 
turned it on, of course forgetting after the fact.  I'll revert it; 
perhaps there's something about my video card (or, equally, my X11 
config) that's forcing it to do all of the stuff in software which could 
otherwise be done in hardware?  The selection of things and changing 
pages/screens is definitely out of sync and slow.
