Thanks for the suggestion. I figured out the cause of my sound going
away, the file /var/run/console/mythtv had gotten corrupted (7mo old
crawling around pushed the reset button on the system) so when mythtv
logged in the system couldn't assign permissions to mythtv.

For some reason I couldn't get the filesystem (jfs) it to clean up
with forced fsck's during bootup, but a boot into Knoppix and a fsck
without the filesystem mounted cleaned it up and all is well now.
