hmmm... i think i just solved my problem. it was axel's hint. i did a
verify and both the dmix.conf and dsnoop.conf didn't match the rpm. i
re-installed the alsa-libs rpm and suddenly myth sound works!
i looked at what was there in /etc/alsa/pcm. there had been a couple
of .rpmnew files there before, and i think i must have assumed that they
were from the new installs. they weren't. the .conf files matched
the .rpmnew files, so were from some prior install. i must have missed
the rpmnew files when i went through cleaning up that kind of stuff last
time around.

so. one mystery solved i guess.
