The true reason is that alsa doesn't currently build on 2.6.17. If it
would, you would get 1.0.11. Now that it doesn't, people have to
resort to 1.0.11rc4.

Yes, it's loaded, but perhaps the driver you are using was broken in
1.0.11rc4 and was fixed later.
