There were other aspects of myth that I clearly hadn't got set up right 
on FC5; I'm getting closer now, but still no sound on new myth 
recordings.  FC5 mplayer gives sound from FC3 myth files, no sound from 
FC5 myth.  I haven't yet worked out a way to get old FC3 recordings 
known to the FC5 database, so can't replay through myth itself.

I thought the problem arose because v4l was muted internally, not 
directly accessible to the various alsa tools, and my query aimed to 
find out if this had changed.
