   That was my belief. but I still have to do the mknod ... ah, no, wait a 
minute, I cut'n'paste the whole bit into lircd start(), so it could well be 
that the pre-lircd 'modprobe lirc_i2c' is all that's required;  if so, I'll 
put that into a sep. place and forget about the mknod.  There's a 
syconfig/modules dir. for that sort if thing, isn't there?
