You might want to take a look at the log files in the mldonkey folder.
Mine are in /usr/share/mldonkey (not sure if that is the default
location though).
One of the most common reasons for mldonkey not starting is that the
last time it ran it was somehow terminated incorrectly and it has left
some *.tmp files. In that case in the logs you will see some kind of
message saying that you have to delete those *.tmp files before mldonkey
will run.
