[ATrpms-users] Mythtv 0.19-128 in FC3: transcoder defaults

This doesn't look like a real ATrpms issue but the Myth Howto says ask
your packager first. I have seen this issue raised elsewhere but didn't
  find a useful response.

When setting transcoder parameters in mythfrontend > utilities/setup >
setup > TV settings > Recording > Transcoders, I select Autodetect from
RTjpeg to MPEG4. This gives me four sliders to play with, labelled:

Bitrate, Max quality, Min quality, Max quality difference between frames.

The last three carry a warning: "Modifying the default may have severe
consequences."

I have not found a button that will revert to the default values, nor
have I discovered a way of finding out what these are after changes have
been made. Maybe I ought to read the source code? In any case, I would
expect the 'best' values to depend on the parameters used to make the
initial recording.

One command line issued by mythbackend read

/usr/bin/mythtranscode -j 8 -V 4099 -p autodetect

but neither -j nor -V features in mythtranscode --help and the 4099
doesn't relate in an immediately obvious way to the slider settings.

Can anyone shine any light on this?

TIA

John Pilkington
