It's not about whether to use/trust 3rd party repos in general, but
more specific in the replacement of packages offered by the upstream
vendor.
My argument is that whether a repo replace a package from the
distribution or whether the user dls a non-replacement package and
uses it, if the repo is borked, you'll system will suffer the same
damage.
And several years of operation show that at leats for ATrpms the bug
rate is quite low and is in almost all cases in non-replacement
packages (in fact of the top of my head there were no real issues with
any replaced packages up to now).
BTW if yum fails on you, just try smart. yum even fails with one repo
enabled, e.g. within fedora updates.
