What benefits would that have? The disadvantage of a fully-supporting
package set is that is add bloat to the system, i.e. fills your hard
disk. But other than that it's harmless.

Similar arguments apply to probably any package out there, even the
glibc - not many really use the hyperbolic functions in the glibc, but
if you do need them and someone removed them, you'll be quite annoyed
:)

If support for these is removed you'll have a very large group of
asterisk users dissatisfied. And everyone has a different favourite
set of feature he likes, so even if removing features would be
desirable, deciding which features to keep or not is very
difficult. Of course for a custom system (think Gentoo), you would
probably want to tune to tha last bit.

Systems like Fedora Core and RHEL try to be rather feature
complete. If you need to develop a distribution for say an embedded
system (e.g. an embedded asterisk phone) you'll start cutting out all
unneccessary functions to gain in size and performance. You'd
probably start with replacing glibc with something slicker.
