You didn't upgrade/install/configure anything?
rpm -qa --last
can give you a time-sorted list of packages installed and
find /etc -mtime 0 \! -type d
can spot any configuration changes.

Is that the same box where ivtv sometimes works and sometimes not?
Maybe there is aaa hardware issue somewhere? I'm no hardware expert,
but the next time you find alsa breaking, try powering off, removing
the ivtv hardware and power on again. Perhaps this piece of hardware
is eating your system. Just a thought, I'm far from understanding
computer hardware ;)
