No pain, no gain, but I have yet to see that I have gained
anything but pain when considering the numberous and
frequent kernel changes.
Why cant these changes be organized into major annual or
bi-annual upgrades instead of monthly birthing excercises.
Why even Microsoft issues upgrades over a more reasonable
timeframe.
When considering mythtv, I have never seen much of a
performance difference between running it on an old kernel
versus running it on a new kernel. Oh wait, yes there
sometimes is a difference; the new kernel sometimes wont
allow the old mythtv system to work.
Maybe one of these days Linux will grow up into a stable and
dependable system and people will quit playing with it.
Until then I keep backups of everything I need for a
specific kernel version including the old kernel itself.
Then I make sure I dont inadvertently cause an automatic
kernel upgrade by doing something stupid with YUM or SMART.
Actually, when you consider that all this software is free
for the downloading, Linux still seems the best option out
there even with the occasional pains. I just hurts less
when we complain about it.
