nvidia-settings can't disable mmx support in random other software,
all it does is disable it for the nvidia libs ...

If you don't take my word for it, then maybe some --version or similar
switch may reveal it. In doubt use that old 586 and see whether it
throws any mmx exceptions. :=)

The true reason behind low performance is usually a badly configured
nvidia setup. Have you been using anything else than atrpms' packages
for nvidia? Have you coinstalled more than one driver version?

Make sure you have nvidia-graphics and yum-plugin-kmdl installed and
use nvidia-graphics-switch to ensure you are using the proper driver.
