Is this all with suspend2 kernels? Or for vendor kernel's? Or both?

The most important thing is to compare the 2849 situation before and
after. It just shouldn't be possible to have different results
with the same content, unless ...

a) Check under /lib/modules/*/weak-updates for spuriously copied over
   kernel modules.

b) check for changes in the package contents rpm -V ipw3945-kmdl-`uname -r` ...

c) check for kmods/dkms packages

d) try rpm -qa --last | less to see what other packages changed from
   working 2849 to broken 2849
