I have updated a machine from FC4 to FC6.
I first tried with both yum and smart, none of them gave me proper result.

So at the end I just used the FC6 DVD.

It worked well and took about 2 hours to install from a DVD on my 3Ghz P4.

However, it then required a lot of fiddling around. The network
configuration had been renamed to eth0:backup, the graphical
configuration got completely lost and had to completely reconfigure
X11.

Other than that, it was quite smooth.
