I haven't had this problem but I found that I could not use the
kernel-specific modules to successfully play certain sounds on a fresh
load of FC6 on my Toshiba laptop. I do have the ATrpms alsa-lib files
but is otherwise the Redhat-supplied files. My problem was a
never-ending repetition of any system sound although sound worked fine
in applications.

This is what I have loaded:

alsa-lib-1.0.13-32.fc6.at
alsa-lib-devel-1.0.13-32.fc6.at
alsamixergui-0.9.0-0.3.rc1.fc6
alsa-oss-devel-1.0.12-3.fc6
alsa-utils-1.0.12-3.fc6

I knew I was going to take the wrong train so I left early.
