Yes, you need to upgrade to smart 0.50 first (in atrpms-testing).

It's a valid approach if you have gone 0.50, but I personally prefer
either a fresh install or using the DVD for the upgrade and then smart
for getting the bits back that the DVD upgrade may have broken.
