They are.

I found a lot of old packages on my system, even some dating back to fc4.
Smart doesn't complain about them and they never got upgraded.
After removing them, smart --gui seems to work but the fonts are all messed 
up.
I guess I'll be working my way through this step by step to find the issues 
and replacing packages one by one (with the help of smart where possible).
