It's a GeForce 4, right?
I think the minimum for the new drivers should be a FX 5200.
I also had problems with GeForce 4 and X 7.1 from fedora 6.
First, I used 8776 and a 15' LCD connected trough a vga output, and had to
replace
the LCD for a CRT monitor. The new X could not identify the LCD model, and
although I supplied the modelines, I only got 800x600 and sometimes X just
gave me a black screen.
