Just to close this thread out, it was my own problem that caused this. 
Somehow I had gotten the configuration files AFU.  A total elimination 
of all Suspend2 kernels, modules and support files followed by a 
re-installation gave me the proper files and perspective to see what was 
wrong and how to fix it.

Garbage in, garbage out...
