Let me ask a counter-question: :=)

Is there a reason for two source distributions for supported vs
upstream kernels?

The release process of 3w-9xxx seems a bit messy like the
upstream_kernels tarball containing another tarball inside with
exactly the same sources again. Looks like a matrushka self-backuping
tarball :)

I'll see what I can do.
