I'm glad to report that the sound problem appears to be solved. It was
unfortunate that I upgraded while in the middle of experiments with
mythmusic - and the CD player - to try to replicate Paul's experience
with sound unmuting and obtain a method that would work with currently
available programs. I'm back again to a sound system that needs a prior
entry to 'radio', which is currently unsupported.
The system that works has Jarod's ~/.asoundcr, unmodified after download
from http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/asoundrc.txt, and the audio output
device is specified in Mythfrontend setup as ALSA:default. Jarod's file
sets this up to be 'unmixed digital' but simple editing can provide
other options. Then in KMix Output select Master and PCM. KMix Input
has no green lights; red lights on Video and Capture. The Video and
Capture sliders don't affect the volume, at least in LiveTV.
But as user mythtv I get
>

> aplay: main:547: audio open error: Permission denied

References to this have gone away now - don't know why.
