I do not think that this is a common problem, have not found anything
like that in Redhats bugzilla.
However, as you said to upgraded from RH9 you should really check if all
packages were upgraded. Sometimes the names differ and yum considers the
old packages as the new ones.
You might try "rpm -qa --last" to see if there are still old packages
around. And of course as already suggested look for broken installs
using rpms --verify option.
