[ATrpms-users] nvidia drivers not immediately usable?

Hi,

let me start by asking if there's a searchable version of the mailing
list somewhere? The archives are not really a good place to go looking
for answers to questions.

So I'll ask them anyway and hope nobody will get pissed at me for asking
something that has been answered a hundred times already :-)

The problem is that after installing the nvidia packages I couldn't
immediately start using the driver because of 2 things (except for the
fact that you manually have to editr the xorg.conf of course, but that's
logical):

-1- the libraries are not in the search path. Only after adding the path
to the new libs to LD_LIBRARY_PATH would applications/games perform well.

-2- X could not load the nvidia kernel module. I had to add a symbolic
link named "nvidia.ko" before it would load.

So my questions are:

- Is it normal that I have to do theses configurations after installing
thoses packages or is something somehow wrong on my system?

- What is the "proper" way to tell the system wich libraries to load?
(Add the path(s) to some config file, change the /usr/lib/libGL
symlinks, something else?)

- What is the "proper" way to load the kernel module? (I can't image the
symlink is necessary otherwise it would have been installed by the package?)

Thanks for any help you can give,
-Tako
