This is to report that I have similar problems - can't boot into X -
which started when I upgraded the saa7134 packages yesterday.  Synaptic
upgraded the kernel too, from 2.6.10-1.766_FC3 to 1.770_14.rhfc3.at

I haven't yet tried upgrading from the nvidia 6629 packages, but still
got the inability to boot into X.  I tried the suggested modprobe.conf
edit (for 6629) without effect; the char-major-195 bit was already there

The original system seems unaffected.
