This also happened to me after a dist-upgrade. The original
/etc/asound.state which I load on each startup seemed to be
incompatible with the new alsa that got installed. I fixed it by doing
as you suggest here, which is to fixit with alsa-mixer, and then I
saved that asound.state file to be loaded each startup. So perhaps
it's an alsa backwards compatibility issue.
