I have this same problem as a normal user. I don't have alsa-kmdl installed,
nor is one available to me (I am not currently using atrpms repo's). The
problem came as a result of an update.
$ rpm -qa|grep alsa
OSS works, ALSA doesn't.
It might be:
Fedora Core release 4 (Stentz), Linux 2.6.14-1.1644_FC4
KDE: 3.5.0-1.6.fc4.kde, xorg-x11-6.8.2-37.FC4.49.2
