I have this same problem as a normal user. I don't have alsa-kmdl installed,
nor is one available to me (I am not currently using atrpms repo's). The
problem came as a result of an update.
$ rpm -qa|grep alsa
alsa-lib-1.0.10-2.FC4
alsa-utils-1.0.10-1.FC4
alsa-lib-devel-1.0.10-2.FC4
OSS works, ALSA doesn't.
