Try downgrading alsa and/or kde to identify the root of the
problem. Did you upgrade both alsa-lib and alsa-kmdl?
I never login as root (graphically), so I haven't seen this
behaviour. I'd advise strongly against doing so in general. Still, if
this is abug, it should be fixed nonetheless.
